HEB ISD: A World-Class Education
Written for HEB Chamber of Commerce, May 2015, to showcase the world-class education that provides the foundation for a strong workforce.
The Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD was founded in 1958 when three cities kept their local governments separate but merged their school districts in order to become even more competitive and high performing. HEB ISD’s rich history of excellence is demonstrated today through International Baccalaureate, Asian languages, Spanish Immersion, Core Knowledge Pre-K, career and technical education, and partner schools in China, India, and Morocco.
HEB ISD serves more than 22,000 students at 20 elementary schools, five junior high schools, two traditional high schools, an alternative high school, and the Gene A. Buinger Career & Technical Education Academy (BCTEA). The BCTEA offers anatomy and physiology, animation, architecture, architecture/engineering CAD, audio video production, automotive technology, collision repair and refinishing technology, computer technology, cosmetology, culinary arts, education, engineering, health science, interior design, and law and public safety. Students can work toward certifications and licensures while in high school to prepare for college or the work force. The BCTEA has strong school - community partnerships with local business so students can have hands-on experience in their field of study.
The HEB ISD Schools of Choice programs are different by design and provide academic advantages from elementary school through secondary school and beyond. Choices range from Suzuki Strings in elementary school to International Baccalaureate in high school. Each program has its own set of requirements and its own path to completion. Parents love the freedom to decide which path is right for
The Core Knowledge Pre-K program is a tuition-based program that creates a strong academic foundation for students at the beginning of their educational journey.
In select elementary schools, students have the opportunity to play the violin, viola, cello and string bass in the Suzuki Strings program. Students also have several options for participation in the award-winning secondary Orchestra program in grades 7 through 12. HEB ISD is the only school district in the area to have a K –12 strings program.
The Spanish Immersion program incorporates the Spanish curriculum, along with the best of traditional instructional programs, to students seeking to become leaders in the global marketplace. Students accepted into the program are taught their core classes in Spanish beginning in first grade.
Students in seventh grade can take Hindi, Mandarin Chinese, or Arabic to prepare for a world economy, and students at Viridian Elementary School also learn these languages through Elementary World Languages. This is the first program of its kind in HEB ISD. It establishes a strong foundation about the history, traditions, art, and music associated with three world languages, as well as provide an understanding of oral vocabulary skills in grades 1-3. In grades 4-6, formal targeted language instruction can begin in the language the students choose. HEB ISD also has study abroad opportunities so students can use their language skills with host families and partner schools in India, China, and Morocco.
International Baccalaureate is a demanding pre-university course of study for highly motivated and academically talented high school juniors and seniors. Those who complete the program take the required exams to qualify for the IB diploma. The IB program provides students with access to the world’s leading universities. The IB program is so beneficial that Texas Senate Bill 111 requires state-funded institutes of higher education to award at least 24 hours of college credit to students scoring 4 or above (on a seven-point scale) on all IB exams.
A rich history of academic excellence, highly qualified personnel, and a clear vision for student achievement provide the framework that prepares HEB ISD students to live and compete in a world economy. This fine-tuned combination is not accidental but is the result of managing for innovation. This has always made HEB ISD different by design, and it is the secret to its success.
